With the Charlotte Hornets’ timeline accelerating after an unexpectedly strong 2025-26 season, Tidjane Salaun’s place in the franchise’s long‑term vision is becoming increasingly uncertain. The former No. 6 pick simply hasn’t delivered the production typically expected from a lottery selection, and he now enters a true make‑or‑break year.

The Hornets always knew the Salaun bet came with volatility. His tools were undeniable. The length, athleticism, and defensive upside was there, but the skill development was going to take time. Charlotte took the swing anyway, hoping the upside would eventually outweigh the rawness.

Two years later, Salaun is approaching his third season in unfamiliar territory: he spent most of the entire 2025-26 campaign outside the rotation, especially with his injury near the end of the season. For a player drafted to be a foundational piece, that’s a glaring red flag.

Tidjane Salaun hasn’t made the leap needed to earn a rotation spot

Salaun has improved offensively, but not enough to force his way into the Hornets’ rotation. His shooting efficiency took a massive jump from his rookie season — up to 50.3% from the field and 43.4% from three, compared to 33.0% and 28.3% a year prior. Even on modest volume, those numbers are very encouraging.

But the defensive end remains the sticking point. Salaun flashed stretches of good defense earlier in the season, yet the consistency never held. Too often he lost track of assignments off the ball, and at the NBA level, those lapses get you pulled quickly. At just 20 years old, it’s understandable that he hasn’t fully grasped the nuances of high‑level team defense, but the reality is that it makes him a liability.

And when you’re not an elite offensive creator, defense is one of the fastest paths to minutes. If you’re neither a plus defender nor a high‑impact scorer, you simply don’t see the floor.

To be fair, this isn’t solely on Salaun. Several players stepped up and legitimately earned their rotation spots. Guys like Moussa Diabate, Sion James, and Ryan Kalkbrenner are among them. Add the returns of Josh Green and Grant Williams from injury, and the competition tightened even further.

Salaun did get ample opportunity to showcase his growth early in the season. A wave of injuries opened the door for extended minutes in December and January, but he didn’t separate himself. Others had a stronger impact, and he ultimately returned to the G League.

The Hornets’ shifting timeline complicates Tidjane Salaun’s future

If the Hornets had continued down the path of their early 4-14 start, Salaun likely would’ve seen more developmental minutes as the team drifted toward the lottery. Instead, Charlotte overachieved, recalibrated its timeline, and is now looking to build on that momentum.

That puts Salaun in a difficult spot. As the roster stands, cracking the rotation next season will be an uphill battle. Add in the possibility of two more first‑round picks and/or additional offseason signings, and the path gets even narrower.

Charlotte also holds a club option on Salaun for the 2027-28 season, with a projected cap hit north of $10 million. If he doesn’t become a meaningful contributor by the end of next year, it’s hard to imagine the Hornets committing roughly 6% of their cap to a player who isn’t impacting games, let alone earning minutes. For Salaun, the upcoming season is exactly what it looks like: all or nothing.
