The Charlotte Hornets have found a cornerstone around whom they can build. In fact, they have two, as both LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller have shown the potential to lead the squad to the promised land.
At this point, though, Ball is the more proven player. The point guard is on his way to a second All-Star appearance, having had a strong start to the 2024-25 regular season. He has also kept the team afloat amid its fierce battle with injuries. A case can be made that the Hornets would be at the bottom of the league standings if it weren't for Melo.
The 2020 draft No. 3 pick's value in Charlotte cannot be overstated, especially considering that it isn't known as a prime destination for free agents. So, the organization and its fans are likely hoping that he will stay long-term.
The Ball patriarch has grand plans in CLT
Ball seems to be enjoying and thriving with the Hornets, and his contract extension means he is signed until the end of the 2028-29 campaign. Still, his future with the franchise is anything but assured. Various factors, such as the possibility of the team failing to climb in the standings or the 23-year-old star wanting to be featured in a bigger market, could push him to jump ship and request a trade.
It's also worth noting that his father, LaVar, stated his desire earlier this year to see his three sons, Lonzo, LiAngelo, and LaMelo, play together for the LA Clippers.
The Ball patriarch's sentiment must have changed, though, as he recently revealed something big is going to happen in Charlotte. He showed up on Hornets arena host Derrick "Fly Ty" Jacobs' Instagram reel, saying, "There's a reason BBB (Big Baller Brand) is in the building." Jacobs also hinted that history will be made in Queen City.
It remains unclear what the big announcement will be. Perhaps LaVar Ball is planning on moving his company's headquarters from their home city, Chino Hills, California, to Charlotte. Or maybe he is still latching on to the dream of watching his sons play together on the same squad.
Whatever the case may be, LaMelo Ball's future with the Hornets looks more secure. And it wouldn't hurt if Lonzo Ball makes his way to the Hive, as the team could use some help in the playmaking department.
Regardless of LaMelo Ball's plans, the franchise should follow through with its goals of transforming the team into a perennial contender. Of course, seeing that scenario come to pass will only give him more reason to stay in CLT.
